stonehenge_mediumthumbThis year’s summer solstice falls on June 21st. The sun rises just north of east and sets just north of west, making it the longest day of the year. Some places will even see at least a sliver of the sun for a full 24 hours. However, the summer solstice is far more than extra sunlight, it is a magical day of potent energy, working in your favor.

The summer solstice represents youth and love, and this year it also falls on a crescent moon, which represents fertility. This will be an abundant day for new ideas, love, marriage and conception. While the energy and power of the solstice will be working with you in your endeavors it is a day that is a bit off balance. Think of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, nothing is ever quite what it seems. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid negative people and situations.

It’s no surprise that this would be a wonderful time to focus on yoga and the chakras. With the chakras literally being wheels of energy in your body, all of them will benefit from the asanas and meditation, but there are a few that will naturally be heightened during at this time, and poses that are best suited to open them.

The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. It helps you to feel grounded and one with the physical body and your environment. Opening and balancing this chakra may help when dealing with issues at home, friendships, and feeling more stable and secure.

Asana: Mountain Pose. The feet are rooted into the ground, and the body is stable and strong.

The Heart Chakra, located in the chest, aids us in love, compassion and hope. This is such an important chakra to balance because it helps us to do everything with love – for ourselves and for others. With the summer solstice being a day of feeling youthful and starting new endeavors and relationships, this chakra will be easier to balance and even more energetic than usual.

Asana: Fish and Camel. Chest openers in general are great for the heart chakra. You’ll also notice that backbends can bring up some buried emotions – this is ok, let it out.

The Third Eye Chakra is located between the brows at the base of the nose. If you’re interested in raising your psychic awareness, solstice energy may be the extra fuel you need.

Asana: Child’s Pose. The third eye is rooted in the earth in this pose.

The Crown Chakra is at the top or crown of the head, and is our connection to the divine. Balancing this chakra heightens our sense of purpose and spirituality, and also aids in psychic consciousness.

Asana: Lotus Pose. The entire body is open and active.

Again, all chakras will benefit more than usual on this day, and all of the asanas are going to help. The real message is to use this day wisely, as it is so powerful.
