After spending a year getting to know Amber Switzer and Holly Goodyear during Eternal Health Yoga’s 2017-18 teacher training, I am thrilled to introduce them to our EHY family as our newest instructors! I can’t wait for you all to get to know them, too. Here is my interview with Amber:
Why don’t we begin by having you introduce yourself?
Hi! I’m Amber! I’m a hair stylist, animal lover, artist, and I love yoga! I am from Louisville, born and raised, but I lived in Cincinnati for a few years. I have a one-eyed shih tzu named Barkley who is my best friend and side kick. I love to travel. I am so excited to get to know everyone and teach at EHY!
We all begin a yoga practice for different reasons. What has your yoga journey been like so far?
Yoga was an elective in college and I thought I’d get easy credits… It was not easy, but I began a relationship with yoga and I enjoyed it. When I lived in Cincinnati I didn’t have many friends and I needed to be social, so I frequented the yoga studio behind my house. I loved it. It was a major stress reliever and fun! I came to Eternal Health on the recommendation of a friend, and I stayed because it was a studio where I felt like I belonged. Everyone was friendly and it was a community I felt welcomed in. I felt like my growth was supported, both in my practice and as a person.
You recently completed the EHY teacher training program. That is a big step! What made you decide to begin a teacher training program in the first place? Were you planning on teaching yoga?
Oh teacher training! Such a bittersweet thing to complete! I’m sad to not have my amazing weekends, but excited to move forward. I feel accomplished having finished it! I decided to go through the program because I was wanting a little life change. I had just turned 30. I needed to find a routine for my life. I was wanting to grow as a person. I had watched several friends go through the program at EHY and they had such beautiful transformations. I wanted to glow like them! When I started this journey, I had no intention of ever teaching yoga. I wanted to deepen my practice and my relationship with myself. Once I started to get into it, I found I really loved it. I felt very fulfilled teaching yoga. It benefited me and I felt like I was helping other people too! It’s a win-win!
Teacher training was intense. It’s crazy to think back to when I first started:what I wanted to get out of it and the way I looked at things. Now I know I got so much more out of it than just learning to teach yoga. It made me a softer person, gave me a better awareness of myself and the world around me, and really taught me some valuable life skills for which I am forever grateful. Meditation and breathing techniques changed my life and how I react to things. It was a magical experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat!
You will be teaching the 9:15 Monday morning Hatha yoga class. Tell us about what is most important to you in a Hatha yoga practice.
In a Hatha yoga practice the most important thing to me is feeling balanced. I want to feel stretched and strengthened, but also relaxed. My breath was steady. If for even one posture my monkey mind was focused on the present moment, I’ve achieved my goal and am a happy yogi!
Awesome! One last question… Is there a “fun fact” about yourself-something that a lot of people don’t know-that you would like to share with our EHY community?
Hmmmm… I am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a brown belt in Judo! A boy told me girls weren’t good at those things so my grandpa signed me up! I did it for a long time. I even taught it until I went to college!
Beginning this June, join Amber for 9:15 Monday morning Hatha Yoga at Eternal Health Yoga.
And join me next Wednesday for part two of this blog post as we get to know EHY teacher Holly Goodyear! Have a great week, yogis!
